AKA How I got into (Cycle) Coaching
I was a very young girl so I have faint memories but I know in my bones what it felt like to constantly see someone sick around me.
I grew up in a household where my grandmother was sick for a very long time (and still is bedridden) and many people around me succumbed to their deaths because of various illnesses. I was never really a healthy child and my problems started when I was 3 years old. Since then, going to the hospital was a regular occurrence. I have had multiple operations and have seen many different types of doctors for various issues.
By the time I was in college, I was sick and tired of being sick.
And that is when the wonderful world of the internet opened up to me. I voraciously read through many health and wellness blogs, and books and watched many videos and ultimately it all boiled down to these 4 things.
- Eat nutritious food
- Move mindfully
- Sleep for 6-8 hours
- Manage your stress
Then came the hard part. Implementing all this into my life. Simple and common as they sounded, it was not an easy process to make this a part of my lifestyle.
I started asking myself if these things really even matter.
Here is what I have found after years of implementation and experimenting:
Eating healthy nutritious food matters
What you eat and digest determines how much energy you have. And how much available energy you have determines what you do on a day-to-day basis and in the long term.
If you have just enough energy to stay alive, then that’s all you’re gonna do in your entire life. Survive, stay alive. Do whatever basic things are required of you till it’s over.
Eating healthy and nutritious foods ensures that you will have more energy for the things you love whether it is family, friends, or your own business.
Eating healthy ensures that you don’t collapse into a heap after work only to get up the next day and work again.
If you have extra available energy, your brain starts being more active. You start thinking about what else you can do other than survive. You shift your mindset to thriving.
And that is what nutrition does to you. It gives you the option to go beyond just surviving. It gives you the option to be and do something more.
And the fulfilment that comes out of that makes it all worth it.
Regular movement/exercise matters
The human body is a finely tuned machine perfected over millions of years.
Throughout evolution, we had access to whatever food nature provided for us, when it did. We also used to walk and run for a huge amount of time in our day.
Since the technology boom, most of us spend the majority of our time in front of a screen, either seated or laying down. This has brought about so many lifestyle diseases which can be overcome by eating and moving mindfully.
And exercise helps you do that.
Exercise need not look a certain way, it can be whatever you enjoy doing. It can be Yoga, strength training, running, walking, swimming, dancing, mobility exercises for your joints, and breathing exercises for your mind.
As long as you are taking care of your body and mind.
Rest, recovery and stress management matters
You cannot give from an empty cup.
You cannot run yourself to the ground and expect to be happy with whatever life throws at you.
This is so true for me. If I don’t take time to fill my own cup and practice being present with myself, I spend the entire day/week/month without being grounded and feeling anxious and stressed for no reason. And then I snap at people for the simplest of my things and unfortunately at the receiving end are the people I love too much.
So getting ample rest, recovery and managing your stress allows you to be happier, healthier and much more kind to the people you interact with.
My Journey to becoming a Cycle Coach and Periods Educator
But despite doing all these things, I felt like something was missing, something not quite right.
And it was – my Period!
Not only did I have huge negative beliefs about my period but I was also in a lot of pain and needed medicine, a break from work and bed rest once every month. Other than that, I also experienced many emotional symptoms which were very hard to deal with and I absolutely believed there was something wrong with me.
And I dove into the internet rabbit hole again.
And what a journey it has been!
I healed myself and completely changed my beliefs about periods. I learnt that the emotional symptoms were actually PMS and something common that I can deal with.
I learnt so much more about who I am and what I am capable of in this cyclic journey of periods and life.
All this was possible because of Menstrual Cycle Awareness (MCA).
Because of MCA, I am now a healed, empowered person who is in touch with myself. And it has been my greatest joy to bring this work to people.
